Almost Labor Day Auction 2009 The 5th Annual OMAA Almost Labor Day Auction will be Saturday, September 5, 2009. Below you will find a list of some of the artworks that will be auctioned off at this year's auction. (Click on the images to see them larger.) (No telephone or email bids can be accepted while the Auction is being conducted.) Note: The artists and donors who contribute artwork to this auction receive no percentage of the purchase price. Consequently, all Live Auction proceeds go to the Museum's general operating fund. The OMAA Board of Directors and staff are very grateful to the artists who have generously donated their creations to this auction, and to the thoughtful donors who have given art work.
Akers is a well-known contemporary realist, painting in drybrush watercolor and egg tempera. His work has been exhibited extensively throughout the U.S., and has been featured in various books and periodicals relating to American realist painting. Will Barnet has been at the forefront of American art for over seven decades. He is best known, perhaps, for his work with family themes, but was for many years an accomplished printmaker and abstractionist. He lives and works in New York and has exhibited extensively throughout the world. This lithograph is a gift of the artist.
Tim Beavis, American Folk Art Series IV, 2009, oil on paper on panel, 27 x10” Tim lives and paints in Kittery Point, Maine. He was born in Ohio and educated at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. His work has been exhibited at the Currier Museum of Art and the University of New Hampshire and is in many private collections. He is represented by Nahcotta Gallery, Portsmouth, NH. The painting is a gift of the artist.
Bradish studied with Arthur Wesley Dow at Columbia University, and in Ogunquit with Charles Woodbury. She was an instructor at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and taught at Parsons School of Design. Her work is in many public collections including Bates College Museum of Art, the Portland Museum of Art, and the Springfield Art Association. This painting is a gift of Mary-Leigh Smart.
Maryelle is a member of the Ogunquit Art Association, the Barn Gallery, and the New Haven Arts Council. Her work is in the collections of the Yale University Art Gallery, Portland Museum of Art, and the Ogunquit Museum of American Art, and she most recently worked on a multi-national photography project in England and France.
Mary B. Call was born in Springfield, Illinois. A clothing designer, theatre set designer, and artist, she first summered in Ogunquit in 1918 and eventually moved here full time in 1965. She has had many solo and group shows and her work can be found at Bowdoin College, Colby College, Farnsworth Museum of Art, Portland Museum of Art, and the Ogunquit Museum of American Art. The painting is a gift of the artist’s daughter, Mary-Leigh Smart.
Davison is a nationally recognized printmaker who studied at Smith College and the University of Michigan. She has exhibited extensively in the U.S., Japan, and Sweden. A long-time member of the Ogunquit Art Association, she is the past winner of the DeCordova Museum of Art Purchase Award. Her works are included in many collections, including Japan's Aichi Schukutoku University. This print is a gift from the artist.
Kate received a BFA in art and art history from American University and has studied at the University of Louvain in Belgium. Her work is much sought after by collectors and she has shown in the 2003 Portland Museum of Art Biennial, and the Frye Art Museum in Seattle. She lives in New Castle, New Hampshire. This pastel painting is a gift of the artist.

Grant is a painter and professor of art at the University of New Hampshire. He studied at Boston University where his most influential teachers were Philip Guston, James Weeks, and Reed Kay. He has received numerous awards including a Blanche Colman Award, an NEA grant, and a grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. He is in numerous private and public collections and has shown his work widely in museums and galleries. He lives in New Castle, New Hampshire.
Hara’s work can be seen at New England galleries such as New Era Gallery, Vinalhaven, Barn Gallery, and Full Circle Gallery in Kennebunk, Maine. She lives and works in Kennebunkport and is the Manager of the Barn Gallery in Ogunquit. This work is donated by the artist.
Dewitt is a respected watercolorist, teacher, and theatrical set designer who studied at Syracuse University. His paintings can be found in many private and public collections, including the British Museum, the Smithsonian, the Cleveland Museum, and the Library of Congress. He is a long-time member of the Ogunquit Art Association. This watercolor is donated by the artist.
Pat studied at Syracuse University, the Cleveland Institute of Art, and at Ogunquit’s School of Painting and Sculpture with John Laurent. Her works are in many collections including the California Palace of the Legion of Honor and the Hickory (NC) Museum. A long-time member of the Ogunquit Art Association, she is a recipient of a National Endowment of Arts award.
Simon Harling, Evening off Portsmouth, 2009, oil on canvas, 8 x 10” Simon was born in Colchester, England and educated at the London College of Printing. He is a painter and filmmaker who lives and works in New Castle, New Hampshire. His work is in numerous public, private, and corporate collections in the U.S. and Europe. Connie is a sought-after artist who lives and works in Rockland, Maine. She received her MFA from Tyler School of Art at Temple University, Philadelphia and a BFA from the Maine College of Art. She is represented by Dowling Walsh Gallery, Rockland, Maine.
Richard was born in Charleston, South Carolina. He received his MFA from Pratt Institute. His work is in the collection of the Currier Museum of Art and numerous private collections. He currently lives and works in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. This work is a gift of the artist.

Born in Passaic, NJ, Henderson joined the Art Students League in NYC and studied under Robert Laurent and William von Schlegell. He taught painting at Vassar College and Wheelock College in Boston. He was a long-time member of the Ogunquit Art Association and his work is in many collections coast to coast. This painting is a gift from Sydney Henderson.
Craig lives and works in Portsmouth, NH. He has taught painting and drawing at the University of New Hampshire since 1981. He has a national exhibition record, has won a Ford Foundation Grant, was a finalist for the Rome Prize in Painting (1987), and was nominated for a Louis Comfort-Tiffany Award (1999). This drawing is a gift of Steve Lizio.
Sean received a BFA in printmaking from the University of New Hampshire in 2008. A member of the Boston Printmakers, his work has been exhibited nationally and may be found in numerous private collections, as well as in the collection of the Boston Athenaeum. This print is a gift of the artist.
Ted studied at the Brooklyn Museum Art School and at the Cooper Union School of Visual Arts in NYC. His work has been included in numerous group and solo exhibitions and is found in many private collections. The artist is a long-time member of the Ogunquit Art Association. Brigitte Keller has exhibited extensively, both in the U.S. and Europe, including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. She has exhibited widely and is in numerous collections. She is represented by Mathias Fine Arts, Trevett, Maine, and resides in York, Maine. This painting is a gift from the artist.
Dorothy is a painter, collage artist, and printmaker who incorporates digital mixed media into her work. She is an author of many books on digital printmaking, art making, and her art. She is Professor Emeritus at Massachusetts College of Art where she founded the Computer Arts Center and a member of Digital Atelier, an artist collaborative. She exhibits extensively in galleries and museums and she lives in Marshfield Hills, Massachusetts. This piece is a gift of the artist.
Don holds an MFA from Yale University, and has taught at the University of California and at Bowdoin and Bates Colleges. His work has been exhibited throughout the US in numerous group shows and solo exhibitions. His work can be found in many public and private collections. This painting is donated by the artist.
Brown has been an active painter and draftsman for over 40 years. He has been a recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship and a Florsheim Grant. He has taught at Columbia University, the Kansas Art Institute and the University of Southern Maine. He has work in numerous public and private collections and currently lives in Berwick, Maine. The work is a donation by the artist.
Isabel was for many years a photographer, writer, and editor for the York County Coast Star newspaper. She was awarded the First Prize for Editorial by the New England Press Association. A long-time member of the Ogunquit Art Association, her work has been exhibited at the Barn Gallery, the Brick Store Museum, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Evelyne received an MFA from the University of New Hampshire, and has also studied at the University of New Mexico. A long-time member of the Ogunquit Art Association, her work has appeared in numerous venues, including the Marshall Store Gallery in York, and at the Ogunquit Arts Collaborative. Antonio Mattei was born in New York and received his early art training at the Cooper Union and the National Academy of Design. Mattei moved to Ogunquit in the 1930s and remained here year-round. His work is in the Albright-Know Museum in Buffalo, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Minneapolis and Detroit Institutes of Art, and the Butler Institute in Ohio. Stuart studied at NYC's International Center of Photography, Adelphi University and the City University of New York. A long-time member of the Ogunquit Art Association, his work is included in numerous public and private collections, including the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Portland Museum of Art, and the OMAA. Lincoln graduated from Columbia University and received an MFA from Queen’s College. He is known as a painter, a muralist, and a sculptor. In 2007, his work was shown in a solo exhibition at OMAA. His work can be found in numerous public and private collections, including murals at the University of Virginia. This painting is a gift from the artist.
Joan is an accomplished collagist who has been a member of the Ogunquit Art Association for many years. Her work can be found in many homes and private collections across New England. She currently lives and works in Naples, Florida. This work is a gift of Steve Lizio.
After graduate work at Kansas University, Dennis moved to Maine in 1998 where he has been a full time painter since 2002. He teaches at Heartwood College of Art and privately. He lives in Kennebunkport where he is represented by Cygnet and Mast Cove Galleries. This painting is a gift from the artist.
Norman earned a BFA from Maine College of Art and has been an Artist in Residence at Holderness Academy, Plymouth, New Hampshire. He has had numerous one person shows and many group shows throughout Maine and New Hampshire. He has also been a member of the Ogunquit Art Association for many years. Russel studied at NYC’s Art Students League, the Maine College of Art, and Heartwood School of Art. He is a member of the Ogunquit Art Association and is a scenic designer for various venues including the Ogunquit Playhouse, Hackmatack, and the Good Theater. Woodbury was an internationally known marine painter and teacher, whose summer school helped establish the famous Ogunquit Art Colony. His work is found in many public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Later in life Woodbury spent the winters in the Caribbean, painting and etching the local scenery. This print is a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Peter Woodbury. Framing is donated by The Framer’s Workshop, Wells, Maine.
